Since its 2009 establishment in the region, Tanzania Albinism Society Morogoro (TAS) has been implementing several projects specifically dealing with Persons with disabilities (PWDs). TAS Morogoro is a member-based organisation that was formed by people living with albinism themselves for advancing their well-being and rights. It is run and managed by people living with albinism. All its activities are geared towards advancing the interests of PWDs, with a special focus on people living with albinism.

In this way, TAS Morogoro has been able to operate and maintain strong working relationships with PWDs and Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) which is crucial in the success of the project implementation. In 2017, the Organisation advocated for the establishment of a special clinic office and doctors in the regional hospital to responsible for providing services for eyes and skin health care for people with albinism including testing for skin cancer and providing sunscreen lotions.

TAS Morogoro has extensive experience in coordinating partnerships with different stakeholders. As one of the DPOs in the region, TAS Morogoro has built strong relationships with government authorities, Non-governmental Organisations and Civil Society Organisations and private entities in the region.

    • Project

Unlocking local Opportunities for Persons with disabilities (PWDs) project advocates for the enabling environment for PWDs (at least 50% female) to identify, access and utilise local opportunities available for them. The project makes sure that pro-PWDs laws with the inclusion of gender equality that the country has enacted are enforced, implemented, and known by PWDs so that they can utilise these opportunities to make a positive difference in their lives.

The project also ensures that the laws are known by stakeholders (mainly private sector, public officials and political parties) so that they can understand, enforce and implement the said laws and policies for the best interest of PWDs in Morogoro, and indeed across the country. In implementing this project, Tanzania Albinism Society Morogoro (TAS) uses several holistic strategies such as holding strategic meetings with decision and policymakers, training media personnel, strengthening the networks/organisations of PWDs in Morogoro, prepares and releases a charter of demands for PWDs for the forthcoming elections in 2020.
