Kakamega County Widows Empowerment Project was established in 2016 as a community based organisation by a group of widows and persons living with disabilities who identified the need to come together and make a change. The organisation empowers women, widows and disabled persons to realise their full potential, worth and strength through empowerment and advocacy activities. Women and disabled persons are vulnerable to poverty, economic instability, Gender Based Violence, discrimination, or denied access to health services and land rights. These are largely contextual but also indicative of the widespread situation in western Kenya.

To scale up support on advocacy efforts for vulnerable women in Kakamega County, the Amplifying Voice and Inclusivity for Widows and Women with Disability project focuses on advocacy strategies for primary prevention of violence, discrimination, and negligence against young women, widows and disabled people. This includes working with men and boys on changing gender norms and the acceptability of violence and ensures girls and women living with disabilities have access to quality health and other services and support.

The project empowers women to understand and claim their rights and mobilising communities on #zerotolerance through legal literacy about international, national and local laws and policies. Additionally, through human rights based approach, Kakamega County Widows Empowerment Project (KCWEP) advocates for the rights of women in property ownership especially land in order for them to own land left to them and access their use to enable them become self-employed through the proper use of land.
